Q&A + Tree Pruning Tips & Tricks

Q. What time of year should I prune a tree?
A. It really depends on the type of tree but as a guide the pruning of deciduous trees (those that shed their leaves in winter) is best carried out during the winter months, as it is easier to see the branch structure. Evergreen trees generally should be pruned in April as they are just starting to grow. The exception to these rules are some of the softer fruit trees or stone fruit trees such as nectarines, peaches, plums, apricots, flowering cherries and cherries. If young they can be pruned during winter months but if fully developed they should be pruned during spring long after any chance of frost that can promote disease in freshly cut branches.

Q. What tools do I need to prune a tree?
A. There are quite a variety of tools needed to prune a tree, they range from small hand pruners right up to climbing equipment and chainsaws. Smaller trees can generally be tackled with loppers, pole pruners, hand pruners and pruning saws. Larger trees generally need to be tackled in a different way which in most cases requires specialist tools and equipment such as chainsaws an even climbing equipment (this is often best left to the professionals tree surgeons)
